چکیده

Subsequent attempts, however, on their part to isolate the compound were unsuccessful. As the quantity of our selenium-sulfur compound was small, and the supply of the source material was exhausted and could not be replenished for several weeks, it was decided that in the meantime it would be worth while to repeat the work of Kiister and Irion with the hope of isolating the thio ether from wool. Familiarity gained with its properties should be of value later when our work on the analogous selenium-sulfur compound is resumed. Several attempts to isolate the thio ether by carefully following

AVAILABILITY OF S - BIS ( r - AMINO - - , GARBOXYPROPYL ) - SULFIDE ( HOMOLANTHIONINE ) IN SULFUR METABOLISM OF THE RAT

L-Cystathionine has been shown to be available to the rat in lieu of Lcystine, while L-allocystathionine was similarly available in lieu of methionine in the presence of dietary choline (1). Studies in vitro revealed the formation of cysteine and homocysteine from L-cystathionine and L-allocystathionine respectively in the presence of rat liver slices (2). Other experimental findings place cyst...

Replacement of diaminopimelic acid by cystathionine or lanthionine in the peptidoglycan of Escherichia coli.

In Escherichia coli, auxotrophy for diaminopimelic acid (A2pm) can be suppressed by growth with exogenous cystathionine or lanthionine. The incorporation of cystathionine into peptidoglycan metabolism was examined with a dapA metC mutant, whereas for lanthionine, a dapA metA mutant strain was used. Analysis of peptidoglycan precursors and sacculi isolated from cells grown with epimeric cystathi...

Nature of the Reaction of Wool with Alkali

The course of the reaction of the cystine in wool with alkali has been reinvestigated. The earlier findings that one sulfur atom is split from each molecule of cystine are confirmed. Of the residual noncystine sulfur in the alka li-tregted wool, mbre than 25 percent has been accounted for as lanthionine. No signifi cant amounts of sulfhydryl groups are in the t reated wools. The results lead to...

Studies on the Sulfur Metabolism of Tissues Cultivated in Vitro Iv. Ergothioneine, Oxidized Glutathione, and Lanthionine by Helen

Previous studies from this Laboratory (1, 2) have shown that chick embryonic heart fibroblasts cultivated in vitro in a completely synthetic medium (3, 4) have an essential requirement for n-cystine plus a supplementary requirement for Lor n-methionine. Of more than thirty sulfur-containing compounds tested, only L-cysteine was found to replace L-cystine completely (5), although moderate replac...

The effect of formaldehyde on the acidic and basic properties of wool.

Previous papers have reported the effects of salt concentration (2) and temperature (10) on the extent of combinat, ion of wool with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. As with other proteins, the tendency of wool to combine with acids and bases is also greatly influenced by the presence of formaldehyde (3). An investigation of this influence is reported in the present paper.’ Owing to t.he ...
